John O' Groats History Project

The Community Council has succeeded in attracting funding from Highlands & Islands Enterprise to commission Professor Jim Hunter of the UHI Millenium Institute History department and his team to undertake a project exploring the history of John O' Groats.

To kick off the project there will be an event in the Village Hall, John O' Groats on 2nd October, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The event will aim to do two things: firstly explain a lot more about the project and what we are trying to achieve; and secondly, to help the researchers by gathering any information - particularly old photos - that you may wish to share with us.

Although it is early days, it is expected that the focus of the History Project may centre around the history of the Pentland Firth, and the researchers are particularly keen to hear your stories and see any old photos, papers, letters from emigrants from the area and so on.

PLEASE NOTE: NO material will be retained by the researchers. Everything will be scanned on the day, logged and recorded and given straight back to the owners.
