 John O’ Groats Mill

The John O' Groats Mill Trust has been set up to see if there is interest in taking the Mill into Community Ownership and developing its potential future in the community.

 Open Weekend a Big Success!

By kind permission of the Houston family, the Mill was open on Sat. 9th and Sun. 10th September for an Open Weekend, to allow the public to have a look around the Mill, to learn about its history, and to offer suggestions as to how they see its future role in the community.

Around 400 members of the Community took the opportunity to visit the Mill and a large number of suggestions were collected over the weekend. These suggestions are still being collated and analysed to see what the consensus view might be; and there is still time to "have your tuppence-worth" and add to the debate.

The Trustees were very encouraged by the response, and in particular by the number of people - over 350 - who have put their names forward to join the Trust.

Next Steps

The next step is to finish collating the views expressed by the community and come up with a concrete plan for the project.

As soon as it is apparent that there is public support for the scheme, we intend to approach the Scotttish Land Fund and other potential sources of finance to begin the process of raising the capital required to bring the Mill into community ownership, and finance whatever developments the Community wants to see happen at the Mill.

We are still anxious to hear from as many people as possible, both to sign up to the membership of the Trust (it costs nothing to join, and there is no commitment involved; it is really just an expression of support for the project) and to bring forward ideas about the future use of the Mill.

Please contact Andrew Mowat (seaviewhotel@btinternet.com) for more information, to pass on your ideas and to see about becoming a member.

Many thanks for your interest!
